Now I know, I know. I’ve probably never posted anything about rap on here but before I discovered punk, I discovered rap and loved it. Just yesterday I played Dr Dre’s 2001 and Eminem’s Slim Shady LP at top volume and they rekindled the same passion I had for each album I had at 14 years old. It was such an amazing blast from the past. Each record oozes unmeasurable intelligence and power and were both game changing releases in their own right. So Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap is a documentary that’s right up my street. It appeared at this years Sundance film festival and has just received a limited theatre release in the US.
Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap, directed by rap veteran Ice-T, sees Ice travel from New York to Los Angeles to Detroit to talk-one-on-one with acts ranging from Run-DMC, Eminem, Dr. Dre, KRS-One, Melle Mel, Kanye West to Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def). The result is an insightful, insider take on the rap game.
Looks promising. I’ll be on the hunt to get a copy. Check out the trailer below.
I’ve also added some rap greats to the RARD playlist. Enjoy
